More and more people are listening to music while working out, but should you also do it?

For performance, there is no debate — it is better to do so!

Studies consistently show that listening to music can enhance exercise performance across various metrics.

For instance, research published on PubMed demonstrates that music can improve power, endurance, and cardio performance (PubMed) (PubMed) (PubMed).

One study noted that “music improves exercise performance by either delaying fatigue or increasing work capacity” and highlighted the positive impact of music on both physical performance and perceived exertion.

Now, if you want to train for willpower, which is a different objective, the goal is to use your will as much as possible.

In such cases, you should reduce the assistance that you can get from substances like caffeine or even from listening to music.

This approach aims to strengthen your mental resilience by relying solely on your intrinsic motivation and willpower.

Now, which timing is best?

Research suggests that both listening to music before and during the workout can increase performance.

A study published in PubMed found that “listening to music before exercise improved the participants’ motivation and performance during the workout” (PubMed).

However, listening to music only before working out might be better because the time spent listening to music is less, so there is less accustomation.

This way, you can maximize the motivational boost from music without becoming too reliant on it throughout your entire workout session.

Finally, which genre should you choose?

Listen to what you like!

According to research, personal preference plays a significant role in the effectiveness of music during exercise.

A study published in PubMed concluded, “listening to preferred music during exercise can improve exercise performance and increase the enjoyment of the activity” (PubMed).

So, listening to music while working out can significantly enhance your performance, whether your goal is power, endurance, strength, or cardio.

For those training to build willpower, consider minimizing external aids like music to rely more on intrinsic motivation.

Timing-wise, both pre-workout and during workout music can be beneficial, but pre-workout listening might prevent accustomation to my eyes, there is no evidence, this is pure speculation.

Ultimately, choose the genre you enjoy the most, as personal preference enhances the positive effects of music on your workout.

Work hard and reap the reward!
